Q1. Who moves the motion to adopt the Treasurers report?

 

  1. Anyone who is a financial member.

  2. The Treasurer.

 

Q2. Is an Agenda necessary for an experienced Chairman?

 

  1. An efficient Chairman will always have an agenda to keep the meeting on track.

  2. It doesn’t matter if the meeting is casual and drifts over and around items many times.

 

Q3. Who can move the motion that the Minutes be confirmed?

 

  1. Anyone who is a financial member.

  2. It should be someone who was at the meeting to verify that the Minutes are a true and accurate record of the events of that meeting.

 

Q4. Can a member who moves a motion make a comment each time someone speaks against the motion?

 

  1. Of course they can – otherwise the motion might get changed.

  2. The mover of the motion saves all comment until the end of the discussion and then requests his/her ‘Right of Reply’. This is the opportunity to convince the members of the advantages of the motions intent and respond to any arguments before it is put to the vote.

 

Q5. Can the Chairman vote on every motion or only when a casting vote is needed?

 

  1. When the Chairman is a member of the organisation they have a vote as a member at the same time as the members cast their vote, and then if the voting is even – and the Constitution allows it – the Chairman can exercise a casting vote.

  2. The Chairman only votes when a casting vote is called for.

 

Q6. Should you absolutely stick to your time limit when your presentation would be enhanced by adding and elaborating on a few more details?

 

  1. Not precisely, just go for it. Your time is so valuable, it’s a bonus for your audience to hear more of what you have to say.

  2. Your audience will appreciate you more if you stay within your allotted time because of your respect of their time.

 

Q7. Do you start your talk with your full childhood and life history to set the scene for your business presentation?

 

  1. Yes, this creates a warm and cosy feel for your audience to get to know the real you.

  2. Only if it’s relevant to your topic, and condensed down to a dramatic statement that is appropriate, eg "How does the daughter of a Queensland cotton farmer advance from insurance sales rep to be the international manager of XYZ internet company?"

 

Q8. Is a fully scripted presentation appropriate in the business talk?

 

  1. Only if you do the 3 P’s. Practise, practise, practise so that it doesn’t sound like someone reading a book. Use lots of pauses to sound natural.

  2. Yes, because you certainly won’t miss anything out and it saves time because it can be read very, very fast.

 

Q9. Can I just learn from written information about how best to improve my speaking skills?

 

  1. Yes – just cram in that knowledge and then wing it.
